On Christmas eve we went over to the IL's. Buggy was wearing her patent Mary Janes (so cute). Of course they got kicked off, so I had interlinked the straps so that the pair was hooked together. When we got home, I reprepped our diaper bag for our Christmas day trek out to see my parents. All was good to go and the shoes were in there still.
Bug's Christmas day outfit was styled sorta like jammies in that it had footies built in, so no need for her MaryJanes - however, I kept them in the bag just in case we needed to change her outfit at some point in the day.
So we arrive at my Parents house. I have the bag set on the kitchen counter and I am digging around for my camera that was tucked down toward the bottom (this was bag #2 containing extra stuff like blankets, the shoes, her santa hat, etc...). I grab hold of my camera and pull it out. At the same time I knock the shoes out of the bag. Well, I thought it was the "shoes" (plural). I pick it up. Only one shoe and the velcro strap is unattached. Hmmm... the shoes have come undone. Let me grab the other one and put them back together so that the pair remains intact. Dig around in bag. Nothing. Look around the outside of bag on kitchen counter (where shoe #1 landed). Nothing. Look on floor. Nothing. Recheck bag. Still nothing. Where in the hell did that shoe go?!
Needless to say, this became the big mystery of 2009. As the year came to a close, the results stayed the same. The single shoe has disappeared.
I can't tell you how many times during the week I called my mom and asked if she found the shoe.
Then on New Years day, my mom calls me saying "The Shoe! The Shoe!". I was like "what?!" In that moment I guess I'd already given up hope about the little Mary Jane - actually my mind had been stuck on the fact that I need new tennies since my feet grew with pregnancy and very few shoes fit me now. I was wondering how my mom knew this and if she was calling to offer to buy me new shoes (that is seriously my pathetic train of thought in that split second). So I asked my mom what she was talking about. She was so excited. She found the shoe! Obviously! Duh.
Apparently, my dad keeps a cup of water on the counter. It's his, and my mom doesn't much mess with it. It was a nice tall solid red colored acryllic tumbler cup. The shoe had landed in it, and sat in a bit of water for just over a week. (Dad apparently doesn't pick up his cup very often). Mom dried off the shoe and it survived its weeklong soaking with nary a scratch. Perfect shape.
Buggy and her shoe were reunited the next day when my mom came down to go to Medieval Times.
hooray for a saved shoe!
